gary's music life

A little bit of history

I have always loved the sound of a banjo. It perks you up. I have witnessed sleeping children in church rise from the pew and start dancing when the banjo sound reached their ears. The adults just gasped! You gotta love it!

I learned after my grandfather died that he used to sponsor bluegrass festivals at his sawmill in southern Indiana, but alas, I never held a banjo until my late 30s and have only played seriously for the last 15 years. This is far too late in life to become a good picker; only late enough to create a quest to pursue the skill to play.

I've played in a series of bands. Gary, David Turner, David Brown, Gloria Meadors, J.D. Woods, and Rick Lovelady started After Class Bluegrass at Grace Seminary. In Grand Rapids, Gary joined Floyd and Vernita Norvell and The Bluegrass Fever Band. About 2003, Gary became a member of the Deadwood Bluegrass Band, a longstanding Southern Michigan traditional bluegrass group, playing banjo and singing tenor.

Currently...

Since arriving in Florida, I am playing banjo for Myakka River Bluegrass Band out of the Englewood area (less than an hour from Fort Myers). MRBB is a long standing band in the area and focuses on traditional and gospel bluegrass.
